The word Hell is used more often in King James version than NIV. We will use the two of them to learn other possible meanings.


K.J. Psalm 86:13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
NIV Psalm 86:13 13 For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths, from the realm of the dead.


How can someone be delivered from Hell? David is sharing that he was once in Hell and has escaped. If this is true, perhaps Hell is something other than an after life experience. Hell and Heaven could be among us hear and now.



Could hell be a condition of spiritual existence here and now?

Notice in the passages below, "pains of hell" and "sorrows of hell." This indicates hell to be a feeling or condition within us. In Psalm 116:3 it 'came upon me' and seems to be a past condition of the writer.

Hell could be result of a persons lifestyle, choices, and actions

People who are in the spiritual state of hell are among us

K.J. Proverbs 9:18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

K.J. James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
NIV James 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.


K.J. Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

K.J. Isaiah 28:15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
NIV Isaiah 28:15 You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.”
