Genesis 3:4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Shame is brought on by our inward knowing or belief that we are wrong. When we believe or become aware that we are wrong, even if deceived, then we have shame. Shame is a feeling that follows the understanding we are wrong. Shame is a sensation designed to prompt us into change. If we are wrong then we ought to change to make us right. So we ought to seek God's righteousness.

Proverbs 13:18 Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.

Shame comes about in different ways. It may be some knowledge about ourselves we grew up with and are just now becoming aware of it. For instance our parents may have told us we were no good or we were to blame for our problems, that we were bad, and perhaps even going to hell. We may have come to believe we were wrong and a failure. This type of shame is similar to Adam and Eve, but instead of a serpent we had parents who perhaps handed their own shame over to their children. They learned they were wrong from wrong knowledge. This can be very destructive. Instead of hiding behind fig leaves people with this shame often hide behind lies and would tend to isolate emotionally if not also physically.

Sharing intimacy growing up may have lead to hurt feelings. This was not the way God designed it. God's design for intimacy is about safety and security through faith, but our beliefs/faith need to be aligned right in order to feel safe and secure. If we trust in ungodly ways we can be spiritually, mentally, and emotionally hurt, but if we have our faith aligned right with God nothing can harm our mind, heart, and soul. We are to trust in God and seek only to please God. We please others of course as a result of seeking to please God because of God's grace. Honesty and truth will form in us a new understanding and faith.

Once we have a firm understanding about God, taking action toward repentance, and building Godly character, then when others try to treat us in a shameful way we may easily disregard it. We will know it is not the truth and find no need to feel uncomfortable. People sin and sometimes attempt to place their fears and shame on others, but we do not have to accept it.

Psalm 22:5 To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

Psalm 34:5 Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.

Psalm 86:17 Give me a sign of your goodness, that my enemies may see it and be put to shame, for you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.
Psalm 119:6 Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands.
Psalm 119:31 I hold fast to your statutes, Lord; do not let me be put to shame.

Psalm 119:80 May I wholeheartedly follow your decrees, that I may not be put to shame.

Our own thinking, messages we tell ourselves, may be shameful even toward ourselves and we must guard against it, correct it, and replace it toward peace. We ought to incorporate different message statements. For example, instead of calling ourselves stupid for making a mistake we can pray to God for guidance and seek how to do better. We can forgive and seek mercy with compassion instead of intimidation. Information which promotes negative feelings and low motivation can be destructive. We ought to be humble of course, but we ought to take care not to teach ourselves to be hopeless and helpless. Instead we ought to think and speak hopeful words. If we see no hope then we ought to seek God in application of God's teachings. Willingness to give up our selfish beliefs and our current way of doing and thinking may be required to break free from hopelessness. If we feel stuck then we need to do something different, perhaps a lot different. Through God's Love, Truth, and Strength we can do so much more then we are aware, yet we must apply Patience, perseverance, endurance, and faith. We ought to apply every effort to grow in alignment with God inwardly through our thoughts to increase our faith in God.
