Is God an angry God?
The bible describes times when God became angry, but it would be poor judgement to describe him as an angry God. God appears to get angry like a parent who tells their child a million times not run in traffic and then they go do it anyway. Over an over throughout the bible love, mercy, and forgiveness are discussed concerning God, but for some reason a few people become fixed minded on how God is an angry punishing God. Any parent who does not provide accountability to their children will most likely run into a lot of problems and regret. God has created spiritual suffering for our sinful choices to help guide us away from repeating the mistakes. Our problems grow when we choose to ignore God's nudging and resist making changes.
God is to protect us as we listen, seek, and obey God's instructions. When we refuse and then move out of God's protection (Ezekiel 39 God hides from us), we set ourselves up for problems. This is not suggesting that anyone following and obeying God is free of hurt or suffering. However, most thieves, murderer's, drug addicts, liars, selfish and dishonest people end up heaping huge amounts of negativity upon their hearts, minds, and souls while destroying others around them. God can protect us from much spiritual suffering in the forms of shame, hate, fear, loneliness, emptiness, anxiety, and anger. Selfishness and pride are our enemies. Fault finding in others, blame, and shame often get in the way.
Exodus 34:6-7 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.” NKJV
(It may be best to read Ezekiel 18 for a better understanding of this last sentence.)
People acting against God and living destructively hurt others. When others get hurt, they tend to hurt others as well. Hurt people often hurt other people. God demonstrates compassion and love inviting hurt people to follow him. Yet it is their choice. Forgiveness is available. As long as we hold a grudge against God for whatever reason, we will be choosing to stay away from God's peace, forgiveness, mercy, and love.
Nehemiah 9:17 They refused to obey, And they were not mindful of Your wonders That You did among them. But they hardened their necks, And in their rebellion[b] They appointed a leader To return to their bondage.
But You are God, Ready to pardon, Gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, Abundant in kindness, And did not forsake them. NKJV
Psalm 89:14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.
Evil can happen from our choices and other's choices.
God is not evil, but God lets it happen, because of our choices. We are given a choice and many chose to be evil and to teach others to be evil. Inside us we have a guide to help us move away from evil if we listen and follow the Holy Spirit.

As we Seek God's will from our heart and increasingly being productive in God's character, our lives can become filled with awe and wonder. Yet when we follow our selfish desires, destructive consequences often develop.
God is good
There is before us a path to freedom, peace, mercy, love, forgiveness, joy, and comfort, but we must choose it.

1 John 4 16 We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. 17 In this love has been made perfect among us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as he is, even so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 This commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should also love his brother. Who is God?
God is our spiritual solution to our inward problems. The development of these characteristics is the solution. Our problems lie within our decisions to follow other's demonstrations and instructions instead of Christ's. If we believe in Christ we follow Christ otherwise we follow deceptions. If we say we are Christian, yet do not pursue behavior as a Christian, as the bible describes Christian behavior, then we are lying or at least following lies. Perhaps we have been taught and many around us have been taught all we need to do is say we are Christian, go to church, and attend a bible study etc.
1 John 2:4 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. NKJV
God has character and students become like their teacher. We ought to increase and practice God's character in all our activities. These are spiritual skills. Being patient and kind takes thought, effort, intention, demonstration, guidance, practice, and learning. This is not black and white, for every situation is unique. As we experience God's character with each other we can better understand God. We ought to grow in knowledge and experience through adapting and assimilating God's character more and more into our belief structure, heart, and attitudes.
We can begin by choosing one or two characteristics to incorporate more into our lives, like patience or truth. We create our schedules around putting them into practice and training. We begin memorizing and reminding ourselves to practice such characteristics in all our activities. In meditation we may envision or imagine ourselves in situations applying these new characteristics. Our hearts must be present and we need to sense the Grace in our participation with the character. It takes time to see a difference, but in time, we can be transformed in a more meaningful, fulfilling, and Christian manner. God's amazing grace becomes alive and active within us and our relationships. Pride, selfishness, fear, and resentment can fade away. We can feel more confident, content, at peace, assured, and hopeful, with love and joy, as we continue to align ourselves with God's principles. We ought to evaluate the spiritual affects practicing such character has on our relationships, feelings, attitude.
Our experience can be enhanced in sharing with someone else like a mentor, spiritual advisor, friend, or significant other. The Holy Spirit within us can build unity in our relationships. Our spiritual connection can feed, develop, and grow through God's love. We ought to read scripture, evaluate ourselves, and practice new characteristics daily. For anything to be solidified within our minds we need to think, practice and remind ourselves repeatedly over time. Faith has to do with belief and putting God's word into practice can provide us with powerful evidence leading to increased faith. Seeing and experiencing is believing.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. NKJV
We ought to take time each day thinking, learning, practicing, seeking, and developing God's character. Below is a long list of scripture verses with God's character. We ought to see how we can put God's ways into practice with increasing measure. Anyone can forgive and have mercy, although some adjustment may be needed to let go of the grudges, pride, selfishness, fear, and resentments which can often block us from God's love.
1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. NKJV
Through humility and willingness we can let go of such barriers. By submission as God's humble servant we may be set free. We ought to slowly let go of old teachings which do not match with God's character and instruction. We all have understandings which need correction. It is always important to remain objective and question ourselves thoroughly and daily. We can't very well learn if we are not ready to see where we are wrong. We all sin and are all wrong in many ways. Growth can occur as we recognize where we are wrong and apply new corrective action, God's Grace. So let's open our hearts and minds, see where we are wrong, and practice some Godly solutions.
