How we view God is extremely important. We ought to relearn correctly with the whole scripture instead of an interpretation from certain selections. God commands us toward love in humility and meekness. But it's still our choice to obey.

How the bible describes God... in one word... intimacy. So we are to build intimacy.

John 3:33 God is truthful
Romans 14:17  For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
Psalm 86:15 But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
1 John 4:16  And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

Psalm 73:26  My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 103:8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

  1. Choose to follow God by practicing God's character.
  2. Follow God by thinking, practicing, and talking about God's character. We seek to know how God's character works and to do it.
  3. We study God's character and put it into action for experiential understanding. We know it best by doing it.

Who is God?

God is described by the Bible with intangible words: Truth, patience, merciful, forgiving, peaceful, compassionate, gracious, and kindness. In order to understand God we need to understand what it is like to participate more completely in God's character. Who can understand mercy if they have not given and received it? We cannot understand spiritual truth by only reading about it. We must experience it.

The development of these characteristics is the solution toward our problems. Our problems lie within our decisions to follow other's demonstrations and instructions instead of Christ's. If we believe in Christ we follow Christ otherwise we follow delusions and deceptions. We may be deceiving ourselves in sin.

1 John 2:4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.

God has character and we ought to know it. We ought to increase and practice God's character in all our activities. These are spiritual skills. Being patient and kind takes thought, effort, intention, and learning. This is not black and white, for every situation is unique. As we experience God's character with each other we can better understand God. We ought to grow in knowledge and experience through adapting and assimilating God's character more and more into our belief structure.

We can begin by choosing one or two characteristics to incorporate more into our lives, like patience or truth. We put our schedules on them. We begin memorizing and reminding ourselves to practice such characteristics in all our activities. In meditation we may envision or imagine ourselves in situations applying these new characteristics. It takes time to see a difference, but in time, we can transform in a more meaningful, fulfilling, and Christian manner. God's amazing grace becomes alive and active within us and our relationships. Pride, selfishness, fear, and resentment seem to fade away. We feel more confident, content, at peace, assured, hopeful, love and joy as we continue our focus and attitude upon God's principles. We evaluate what affect practicing such character has on our relationships, feelings, attitude, and activities in life.

Our experience is enhanced in sharing with someone else like a mentor, spiritual advisor, friend, or significant other. The Holy Spirit within us builds unity and relationships. Our spiritual connection feeds, develops and grows through God's love. We ought to read and evaluate ourselves often, practice new characteristics daily, and create reminders. For anything to be solidified within our minds we need to think, practice and remind ourselves regularly and consistently.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Take time each day thinking, learning, practicing, seeking, and developing God's character. Below is a long list of scripture sharing God's character. We ought to see how we can put into practice in increasing measure what God demonstrates. Anyone can forgive and have mercy, although some adjustment may be needed to let go of the grudges, pride, selfishness, and resentments which can often block us from God's love. Through humility we can let go of these barriers. By submission and becoming God's humble servant we may be set free. We ought to slowly let go of old teachings which do not match with God's character and instruction. Many of us have incorrect understandings which need correction. It is always important to remain objective and question ourselves. We can't very well learn if we are not ready to be wrong. We all sin and are all wrong in many ways. Growth can occur as we recognize where we are wrong and apply a new solution. So let's open our hearts and minds, see where we are wrong, and practice some Godly solutions.

 Is God an angry God?

The bible describes times when God became angry, but it would be poor judgement to describe him as an angry God. God appears to get angry like a parent who tells their child a million times not run in traffic and then they go do it anyway. Over an over throughout the bible love, mercy, and forgiveness is discussed concerning God, but for some reason a few people become fixed on how God punished. Any parent who does not provide accountability to their children will most likely run into a lot of problems.

God is to protect us as long as we listen, seek him, and obey God's instructions. When we refuse and move out of God's protection (Ezekiel 39 God hides from us), we set ourselves up for problems. This is not suggesting that anyone following and obeying God has a perfect life. However, most thieves, murderer's, drug addicts, liars, selfish and dishonest people end up heaping mounts of negativity upon their hearts, minds, and souls. This creates spiritual suffering the human eye might not be able to see, yet it exists. God can protect us from spiritual suffering like, shame, hate, fear, loneliness, and anger. Selfishness and pride are our enemy. Fault finding in others, blame, and shame often get in the way.

Exodus 34:6-7 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”

Numbers 14:18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’

People acting against God and living destructively hurt others. When others get hurt, they tend to hurt others as well. Hurt people hurt people. God demonstrates compassion and love inviting hurt people to follow him. Yet it is their choice. Forgiveness is available.

Nehemiah 9:17 They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.

Psalm 89:14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.

Evil can happen from our choices and other's choices.

God is not evil, but God lets it happen. We are given a choice and many chose to be evil and to teach others to be evil. Inside us we have a guide to help us move away from evil if we listen and follow that spirit.

1 John 1:5 God is light; in him there is no darkness at all

2 Thessalonians 1:6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you

Seeking God's will from our heart and increasingly being productive in God's character, life becomes so much more as He describes it would be. Yet when we follow our selfish desires, destructive consequences often develop.

God is good

There is before us a path to freedom, peace, mercy, love, forgiveness, joy, and comfort. We walk the path inwardly by choosing to build love outwardly with honesty and sincerity. We humbly submit ourselves as slaves to God, for God's purpose, and love God with all our heart, soul, and strength as commanded from the beginning.

Mark 12:30 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

Matthew 22:37-38 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.

Luke 10:25-27 “On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Deuteronomy 6:5 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

1 John 4:16 “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”

1 John 4:20 “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.”

Proverbs 10:12 “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.”

1 Peter 4:8 “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”

We are called to repent, follow, obey, listen, seek, look, and love God. When we love God with all our heart, soul, and strength we will be with Him. This has been the case from the beginning.

Psalm 73:1 Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart

Psalm 84:11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless
